College Rejections
After pondering my own college rejections and the rejections of my friends, I began to form my own idea about the college selection process.
It seems as though the top-notch colleges promote the ideal applicant to be well-rounded to a point where he or she cannot give 100% to one particular sport, club, or project. Although this involvement looks great on paper, an individual cannot be in two places at once.
Although I may be bitter from my own rejections, I’ve learned that it’s not really about where I attend college.
I recently was voted “most likely to succeed” by my high school class. I’m not really bright. I’m not academically gifted by any means. To be honest, I don’t really know why I won, but I do know this: I’m an average kid with a strong work ethic.
I’m not in the top 10 of my class. Hell, I don’t even think I’m in the top 10% of my class. I didn’t get a 2100+ on my SATs. I just work hard and I put 100% into my activities, job, and school.
So yes, “I’m not smart enough” isn’t an excuse. I really don’t think that my superlative is that great of a deal, but at least my peers thought of me as relatively successful. Although I don’t know to which aspect of “success” they were referring, I’m still content with the decision. Hell, I’m even glad I was nominated. The other nominees shared many of my same qualities, too. I can only hope that people found success in my dedication or my character.
I’m nothing special. I just work hard.
